Entstehung des Parks

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Mit der Internationalen Gartenbauausstellung (IGA) 2003 in Rostock ist ein Areal, das von mehreren Bachläufen durchzogen war, zu einer blühenden Landschaft umgewandelt worden. Idee und Ziel war es, den schmerzhaften Strukturwandel Rostocks durch konzentrierte städtebauliche Maßnahmen abzumildern und zu begleiten. Deshalb war die Internationale Gartenbauausstellung vor allem ein Infrastrukturprojekt für ganz Rostock.

Einerseits wurden wichtige Verkehrsprojekte wie der Warnowtunnel, die Untertunnelung des Hauptbahnhofs und die neue Messe mit großer Landes- und Bundesunterstützung umgesetzt. Kernstück der Infrastrukturmaßnahmen aber war ein großer Landschaftspark und Veranstaltungsort im Nordwesten der Stadt. Dafür wurde eine brachliegende Fläche zwischen den Stadtteilen Groß Klein und Schmarl ausgewählt – die sogenannte Warnowniederung. Es wurden fast 100 Millionen Euro investiert.

So entstand der IGA Park auf eine Fläche von circa 100 ha – das heute größte Open-Air-Gelände nördlich von Berlin und ein wunderschöner Landschafts- und Erholungspark für die großen Wohngebiete im Nordwesten Rostocks.

Insgesamt kamen im Jahr 2003 2,6 Mio. Besucher in die Internationale Gartenbauausstellung in Rostock.

Landschaftspark mit starker kultureller und sportlicher Nutzung

Seit April 2019 ist der Zugang zum Gelände kostenfrei.
